My stance on cyberbullying
Now I know that people couldn’t care less about what I say or think, but I kind of feel that I need to rant a bit. Anyone who reads this is going to dislike what I’m about to say, but I feel I just have to say this.
I think this whole cyber bullying epidemic is bullshit. It is a scapegoat being used by the media in order to have people to blame when kids kill themselves.
Now surely you must be furious with me if you’re there. What you don’t understand is that I was suicidal at the age of 15. Yes I was bullied, but surprisingly it wasn’t the reason I wanted to die. My home life was so terrible that I never wanted to go home. My father made it difficult for me to get involved in school activities or make any kind of progress. So my grades began to fail, knowing that there was little reason to continue if my father would make it difficult for me to go to college. That is why I wanted to die.
Now during my depression I became obsessed with the internet and the people I met there. However, I wasn’t a fucking idiot. There were simple rules that were discussed in school. They talked about being cautious online and taking control of your personal information. It’s real simple common sense.
1. be kind and courteous to people online
2. do not give out your personal information
3. stay away from shady places online
4. use a screen name and guard your identity.
5. Make a password that corresponds to something only you would know
6. If someone is being an asshole don’t engage. Say “screw this,” and leave or block the bastard.
I knew this in 1998. What we have is a generation of parents not talking to their kids about this. We also have young people that think they are invincible. They believe that they can do whatever they want online, and it won’t have any ramifications. This goes for the victims as well as the bullies. In truth there will always be bullies because it is human nature to establish pecking order. If we know that there is always going to be bullying, why try to prosecute people that are incapable of understanding the seriousness of their actions?
I see it in this way. Bullies are like mountain lions. Now they are used to doing what they do. They hunt prey, and focus on being a mountain lion. However civilization has begun destroying the habitats of these creatures. So what happens? They begin making their way into society, and scaring the ever living fuck out of people. In truth they are just mountain lions being mountain lions because they are meant to be predators. It’s not their fault that we had to start changing things. So what happens to them? People begin going in and shooting them one by one. They are deemed unacceptable in our eyes, because we need to constantly feel like we are in control of the chaos of nature. We can’t have something around that might lower us on the food chain right?
If we were still in tribal societies, it is likely that some of these bullies would establish a place for themselves above those they harm, atleast until they were pushed back down by angry victims. We don’t allow people to get angry in our society. It’s not considered acceptable even if it’s for good reason.
If you want to start blaming people for suicides, you might as well blame the entire school. You might as well blame every kid that saw it, didn’t agree with it, and didn’t step in. We might as well blame every person that never had the balls to do the right thing. Believe me if we did that, there would be no room to jail them all.
When we start tossing around blame, it leaves victims with zero accountability. They killed themselves. If a surfer goes into waters where there might be sharks, get’s attacked, and dies.. Who is at fault? The shark? The shark was doing his job of being a shark. Just as young people are doing their job of being immature vengeful assholes fueled with unstable hormones. It’s what they do. You can’t expect them to have the maturity of someone far older just because you expect it.
In addition to all that, we are simplifying the complexity of depression and mental health, when blaming it all on bullies. These people likely needed medication and counseling, but no let’s just find some young people and take out our need for blood and retribution on their futures. This is what people want in all this. They want sick and violent revenge while trying to make sense out of situations that are not easily made sense of.
I hope all of you sick revenge loving assholes are happy. Because this is the civilization you want. A place where a kid can be charged with distribution of pornography by sending out naked pics of themselves. A place where we can destroy the futures of young people for being stupid and not having proper foresight. We want to punish the young for making mistakes that many of ourselves have been guilty of at one time or another. I hope everyone of you is pleased at what we are becoming.
